Please drive safely in New York construction zones this weekend

The Memorial Day weekend is upon us, and with it comes outings with family and friends that often involve travel plans. For many in New York City, it's a chance to get out of town and enjoy less hectic locales.

As always, law enforcement agencies urge holiday travelers to drive safely, with a special emphasis on proceeding carefully through construction zones where accidents can imperil not only motorists but workers.

New York construction workers safe after scary fall

Two construction workers took a frightening fall yesterday while working on a bridge about 60 miles north of New York City.

The pair were working on the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge when temporary supports gave way and left the men hanging by their safety harnesses from the bridge spanning the Hudson River. While this construction accident was undoubtedly scary, the two walked away from the incident unhurt.

Benefit for New York construction worker killed in accident

He is remembered as much more than a determined and skilled construction worker. He's remembered as a hero who saved his neighbors from a burning home. And in the most important role he had in life, he is remembered as a devoted father.

He is remembered, too, as one of many construction workers injured on the job. For the 37-year-old man remembered at a recent benefit, those horrific injuries sustained in a fall proved fatal.

Faulty construction blamed for ceiling collapse

Residents in New York know how common it is to see buildings around the city under construction. Older buildings are being renovated and repaired and newer structures are being erected. With all the chaos and construction that often goes on during building projects, it is not uncommon for the integrity of a structure to be compromised.

During many construction projects, it is often the workers themselves who are injured when a roof or building collapse happens. People can be crushed under heavy structures and end up with broken bones, back and neck pain or even life-threatening injuries.

New York construction worker injured in fall

About 300 miles northwest of New York City is the town of Hornell. That's where a construction worker from Canaseraga was injured late last week in a fall from the Route 36 bridge.

After the construction accident, the 20-year-old was listed in guarded condition at a Rochester hospital.

New York City construction workers sustain serious injuries

Yesterday morning, two men working in Brooklyn with a cherry-picker truck were hurt when the vehicle toppled over.

The New York City workers were taken to a nearby hospital where they were listed in serious condition after the construction accident.

Clinical trial for spinal cord injuries underway

For people who have sustained spinal cord injuries, there may be good news on the horizon. Recently, a clinical trial began that could have positive implications for individuals who have been paralyzed.

The study is being conducted by The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis. The clinical trial involves removing nerve tissue from the leg of an individual who has been paralyzed due to a spinal cord injury. The physicians then grow Schwann cells - which are different from stem cells - from the removed tissue. After the Schwann cells have grown, they are then transplanted back into the injured patient's body.

Survey: Half of New York City's construction sites unsafe

Nearly half of New York City's construction sites are unsafe, a survey by the Department of Buildings indicates.

The two-month survey indicates that about one third of all sites had at least one safety violation and that 13 percent had violations so serious that investigators stopped work until problems were fixed.

Remembering fallen New York workers

Every day, construction workers are injured on the job. Because of the dangers inherent in working at heights and around large equipment, the risks of serious injuries among New York City construction workers is high.

Far too many have lost their lives to injuries sustained on the job. Yesterday, there was a memorial service in Buffalo to honor fallen workers in our state.

New York City construction worker injured by fall earlier today

Emergency workers responded earlier today to a call at a construction site across from the Javits Center, 655 W 34th St., a spokesperson for the New York City Fire Department said.

A construction worker fell into a hole on the north side of the Eleventh Avenue and West 34th Street site and was injured. No word was given on his condition.
